I used to hear that a house you can afford is equal to about 10 years of your salary, and that you should have about 20% down payment. If you have $200,000 cash for a down payment, and make over $100,000 a year, you might be able to buy a house. But maybe not. Because those numbers don't add up anymore. In today's world, the reality is that a bank will want to see at least $180,000 in income before they make that kind of loan.
