Yesterday was a long day. Changing the axle u-joint wasn't easy. Rusted in. Couldn't even see the c-clips due to the rust. Eventually I got it done.
So I was tired and maybe that's why I had the problem of driving a new outer seal onto the axle. It just wouldn't start. Removed the tool and the seal wasn't even started. So I gave up for the day.
Today I think I'll try a bigger hammer. Any advice before I destroy everything doing this?
For my 08 I used emery cloth to remove any rough corrosion from axle shaft surface.....I then put a bit of grease on both the knuckle seal and axle surfaces. Also found carefully starting the seal 1 side at a time worked the best as well. Just be careful not to start one side of the seal to far and bend it. I actually never even used the tool to install my axle knuckle seals.......that was 5 years ago now and they both still hold vacuum.
Thank-you for your reply. I didn't use grease as it appears there's some sort of green coating on the inside of the new seal. If it's an adhesive/sealant, I didn't want to use grease.
I now have it on, and it boils down to my inexperience as I never changed one before. My 2.5 lb maul wouldn't start it, so I switched to my 8 lb lead hammer. Even then, it took a while before I could get it started. After that, progress was made, but very slowly with many, many heavy hammer blows.
Clean the stub shaft and k buckle with course steel wool, Emery cloth or sand paper. Then grease the parts and whack the new seal on, that coating is like a sealant ford uses to help hold a vacuum. I have the tool also and sometimes it's still a pain in the rear to get the seal on easily

Thats why I cut them with a torch... easy peazy and the caps fly out and no bending the ears.
