Ford first put the Ford-o-matic in trucks in 1953, according to my parts books. You could get it behind the 215 CID 6 cyl. or the 239 Flathead. I had one behind a "Y" block in a 57 Ford and it was a great tranny, never a problem. It was used until the early 60's in cars and trucks.

Check the Shift Stop in the Steering Column for Wear, that is more than likely the cause behind the accident. If worn badly enough the vibration from the idle could have made it Pop Out into reverse.
