Millam's Tech Tips - Tailight Gaskets

I need new gaskets for my taillight lenses and I hate the cheap azzed shi-ite that companies sell. Foam rubber junk.
Some 9 years ago someone gave me some of those fiber reinforced silicone baking sheets.

I don't have any use for them as I prefer my aluminum ones.

So...

Simple and in a few years, or when a bulb needs replacing I'll find out how well they worked.
My only real concern is that the silicone may attack the plastic.

#2 - Vinyl wire wrap.

Everyone has run into the problem of the original wrap coming undone. Electrical tape works to an extent but it will do the same but with a sticky mess added in.
I was looking in my junk drawer and noticed a tube of vinyl repair glue from my grandkids inflatable pool.
Ding!
I went out and cleaned the end of the vinyl tape and applied a bit of the glue.
Voila!

So I cleaned the goo off of a bit of electrical tape that I'd wrapped.

And this stuff actually melts the vinyl together so there won't be problems in the future.
Except that now it won't unwrap without cutting...
Sigh. There's always something...

I had bought some screen protectors for my phone. I didn't use one and I've switched to a new phone.
As I turned to throw this one in the trash I remembered a little project that I'd started for my f600 instrument panel.
I tried using some Stained Glass Spray paint on plastic with less than spectacular results. The stuff is made for glass...
So here is what I did to replace the very faded green plastic bits on the turn signal indicators. My truck is going to be blue so I made my indicators match.
The screen protector cuts like butter using a regular glass cutter.

Plastic running lights, taillight lenses, and signal lenses fade pretty badly over the years.
Some judicious use of these paints can make yours look darned near new.

Tired of your bulbs corroding on the brass?
I've taken to using No-AlOx.
Available at Home Depot, Ace Hardware, and electrical supply stores.

As long as one sprays some white lube or other lubricant into the NSS every now and then these switches hold up pretty good. But if this isn't done then there is a bit of a design flaw that always leads to the NSS failing. Inside there are 2 brass ***** that are the contacts for the electrical continuity. Due to a lack of lubrication these stop rolling and begin to wear grooves in the ***** and the contacts. Soon the no longer make electrical contact.

I open the switches, clean them up, replace the brass ***** with steel bearings that I buy at Ace, lube the sliding parts well with silicone grease, and reassemble.
It would be possible to make new contacts but it would be a royal PITA.
I'm not to interested in paying $90+ for a replacement from the auto parts stores. But then it would be a "new" switch and has value there.

I found the NSS missing on my wife's '71 SportCustom and the harness cut and spliced allowing it to start in any gear. Fortunately I have a few spare NSSs so I rebuilt one for her.

That silicone tail light gasket should last a long time. Good idea.

I thought that I'd throw in a picture of the brass beads.
(Amazing, that on any forum today, that the word b-a-l-l-s would be censored. As well as many other commonly used words.)
These are the old contact beads. When there is no lubrication they stop rolling and wear out as they slide across the contacts.
Each one of these beads has a corresponding wear groove on the side facing away from the camera.

Who hasn't wrapped a wiring harness all nice and pretty and then find it beginning to fray a few months later?
I found this at Home Depot.

Yet another great product by Loctite.
Five seconds to fix that ugly frayed wire wrapping.
