Throttle Linkage

Am working on a '50 F-1 that had a 226,(blown engine) and replaced it with a 239. My question is which throttle linkage do I use ( see pics). The bigger one ( top pic) I have been told is for a 226 and the smaller one is for a 239 but I do not know which one goes where. The bigger one lines up to holes in the firewall but does not fit along side the brake pedal. Is it supposed to come through the tranny cover,( which I do not as of yet have either), basically am asking which way to go.

If memory serves me correctly, the S is the V8 and the U is 6 cylinder. It's easier to see how it goes if you hold it correctly. The 2 bolts go through the firewall from the engine side, and the little spring thingy sticks through a hole in the trans cover. The 2 cup washers are the retainers for the firewall insulation pad inside the cab.

Thank you and happy turkey day to you and yours. I do not find any holes that line up for the one for the 8 cyl but presume that I have to drill it because the truck came with a 226.

I believe the pivot bolts should slide on the shaft. My truck was converted to the 226 prior to me getting it but there are no new holes in the firewall.

You should not have to drill any holes. If the bolts don't line up with the existing holes, you may have a linkage from a wrong year/bodystyle.

The lower one is correct for the V8. It will bolt to the firewall with the same two holes as the six cylinder linkage. The cup washers will be on the inside and help hold the firewall pad in place. The bolts will not slide on the tube, they are the same spacing as the six cylinder linkage. It bolts on the outside center of the firewall with the ball end up and the end with the threaded sleeve thru the floor of the cab to the inside.

I guess I got the wrong linkage for the v8 as it does not slide on the bar and the distance between the bolts on the U shaped one, ( 6 cyl) is about 8" and the distance on the S shaped on,(v8) is about 5 ". Is it possible to drill holes and make the S shaped one fit?

I went out and measured the bolt spacing on the linkage on my '51 F6 that had a six cylinder in it. You are correct they are at about 8". I always thought the six and V8 had the same spacing and were interchangeable. I guess that is what I get for thinking. Comparing the two pieces in your photos, it looks like you may only need to drill the RH( passenger side) hole to make the V8 part fit your cab.

Thank you for the information, I went out and double checked the measurements and discovered what you said about drilling the right side. If it ever stops raining here I will get out and do that. Thanks again and in regard to not remembering things, of all the things that I have lost, I miss my memory the most

I believe the narrower linkage is for the 53-6 trucks. Personally, I would not drill the firewall to accommodate the wrong linkage. It would be best to be patient and get the correct part, and save yourself potential headaches down the road.

Wayne, The narrower linkage is the correct V8 linkage, it came off of my '49 when I did my Mercedes swap. I had another V8 one with a damaged ball end so I modified it instead of ruining the original linkage.

Edit: After thinking about it, it makes sense that the six cylinder linkage is longer as the carb is off to the passenger side of the engine and the V8 is centered. The six cylinder linkage would probably have broken if the tube mounting it to the firewall had not been lengthened.

Here is a shot of the firewall pad on a '51 F6 that originally had a six cylinder engine. You can clearly see that there is a knock out in the pad for the V8 throttle linkage, also note that the six and V8 linkage use the same hole on the left hand side.
