Axle casing differences

Looked through some threads and couldn’t find much so figured I’d see if anyone could help.

My rear end differential (2008 F250 3.73 LS) and pretty much who rear end needs to be replaced I do have a replacement but it is extremely rusted out and needs new wheel bearings. This past weekend we just pulled the rear end out of my buddy’s truck (2011 F350 3.55 w/ elocker)and swapped in a pretty much new rear end from a 2018 that we found for a good deal. Basically my question is are the differential casings the same and will I will able to swap out everything from my good parts diff into the 2011 casing. Mostly just the pinion is what I n is is different as the 2011 one is much larger.

When you say the "pinion is much larger", are you talking about the diameter of the teeth or the shaft or what? The diameter of the pinion teeth will vary depending on the gear ratio. What ration is your rear end? What is the ratio of the 2011 rear end?

Let me get this straight. You want to pull the carrier with the 3.55 gears from your buddies old diff and put them into your truck that now has 3.73 gears, correct? Is your truck a 4 wheel drive? If so, you need to do BOTH front and rear. Or is it that you are going to put your gears into his complete axle housing, and then put his axle under your truck?
The way your post sounds to me, you are also asking if the carrier ONLY can be swapped.......NO....both the pinion and the carrier must be swapped together. The ring and pinion are ALWAYS matched sets. Please clarify.

By pinion I'm guessing he means yoke.

I'm ASSuming the 10.5 uses a crush sleeve like the 10.25. I wouldn't go zipping off any pinion nuts without some research and an inch lb torque wrench...

There may be a crossover u-joint
