I accidentally ran my 1965 F100 i6 300 out of gas and now i can't get it started again after putting gas in.
I removed the fuel line from the carb, no gas. I removed the fuel filter and it was empty. Left the filter off and turned it over, no gas. I then tried with and without the gas cap to avoid any venting issues.
I'm still new to carborated engines, what am i missing about priming a mechanical fuel pump? It is vertical with the filter on the top of the pump so i don't know how i would fill the filter.
Run a piece of hose from fuel pump inlet and drop it in a jug of gas. This will tell you which way to look for problem. There is often a lot of gunk in 50 year old gas tanks so my guess is the line to fuel pump is clogged.
As I suspected the eccentric was the problem. The tab was broken off and the bolt holding it and the cam sprocket was loose. Good news is I got my timing chain and gears replaced so I should be good until the next rebuild. I also found a crack in the water pump. It wasn’t leaking, but I will replace it none the less. Parts showed up today so time to put it back together!
Broken tab on eccentric Tab still sitting in the drive hole of cam timing sprocket.
