What would cause the 4wd kick in while driving? When you take off down the road and make a turn either way, the 4wd kicks in automatically, even though it's not put in 4wd. Have checked everything I know that might be causing it and still no luck. Thanks
two things happen on the 4 x 4... electric motor on transfer case engages the front drive shaft... and vacuum pistons at each front wheel lock the axle shafts to the wheel hub....I assume what you have is the front wheels engaging by loss of vacuum... the front IWE ( vacuum pistons) are normally enaged in 4 x 4 with the motor off... when you start the motor, the vacuum pulls them OUT and you go into 2 x 4... If you change throttle positions "take off down the road", the vacuum can drop and possibly engage the front wheels. I will post a link so you can read more..
Thank you Steve(ill) for your reply. I have checked the actuators on the hub and they are ok. I thought it might be the check valve, replaced that and it still didn't help. Did get new vacuum lines and going to replace them and see if that's the problem. If not, guess the transfer case/motor will be the next thing to check. I sure hope it's not the transfer case
if the transfer case engaged, and the wheel hubs did NOT, then you probably would not know it.... I assume the 4 x 4 "kicking in" ment you could hear or feel the front end engage.......
you should go thru the REPAIR and TEST steps in the IWE write up to verify that you actually have VACUUM.
