fuel pump Q
The location of inlet and outlet fittings doesn't matter except, you'll have to maybe bend new fuel line up. NAPA sells "brake line" that bends up really nice for this with fittings pre-installed and flared. I don't particularly care for any rubber hose in fuel line around the engine except as where originally used by the factory for vibration relief and engine movement. Too many places to leak or fail because of modern gasoline. Fuel-injection rated hose I'm told is much better.
It's important to check fuel pump pressure output even with or especially with a new manufacture fuel pump, they are notorious these days for being defective right out of the box. A mechanic's vacuum gauge (which you should have) will test fuel pump pressure. If it is not within spec, take it back and try another pump. If it is within spec then check the "wet height" in the carburetor fuel bowl with the engine shut down after running at idle for a few minutes.
