I have a 2005 Ford Excursion Limo. Limo's are different because the electronics and drive train seem to go for the older style based on the VIN ( 1F1NU40S95EC03975). It has a Triton V10 6.8 engine mated to a 4R100 2wd Tranny. What other makes and models will work with my vehicle? I hear some vans and super duty trucks would work, but expeditions and lesser trucks may not be as strong.
You can use a 4R100 from any two wheel drive vehicle that has a 6.8L V10. Since the V10 was never available in the Expedition, you will not find a compatible transmission there. The trans in a late 99 - 2004 V10 in either an E-Series or an F-Series will be a direct bolt in as they are identical to your transmission.
Thanks for the reply Mark. I'm talking with LKQ right now, and they swear it will not work. What would make the ones in the E series vans incompatible with the excursion? I did make sure the tranny was from a 2wd, V10 gas also.

Didn't I say that they are identical? As far as I know, there are NO differences between a 2wd V10 transmission that was originally in an Excursion and a 2wd V10 transmission that was originally in an E-Series.

In '05 the Super Duty trucks went away from the 4R100 trans, many parts suppliers lump the '05 EXs along with the trucks but in reality the EX kept the older trans that last year. It's possible LKQ is also looking at the '05 EX as a truck, whereas the 4R100 wouldn't match up. Mark is spot on, the vans with the 4R100 will be the same as the RWD EX's 4R100 trans. See what LKQ says about the trans going into an '04 EX, if they are lumping your '05 in with the updated trucks the '04 would show a match and your '05 and the '04 are identical each besides the different headlights and grille.

Got the tranny from the Ford E Series installed, but there are differences. The bell housing is not the same and had to be swapped, and some of the wiring harnesses were not the same. After that, everything did work properly, except for a vibration issue. Not sure why, but when I go faster than 20 miles an hour you feel a vibration even when you slip it into N while coasting. My thoughts are the driveshaft, but I'm open to your opinion.
The bell housing is not the same and had to be swapped,
The bellhousing is specific to the engine, not the vehicle. So you got a trans from a truck that had a different engine than yours did.
The bellhousing is also not removeable. The only way to swap the bellhousing is to cut it off the case and weld a new one on. That is nearly impossible to do correctly. So what did you really swap?

That points to the driveshaft, or possible the bushing in the extension housing on the back of the trans.
I'm sorry if I used the wrong term, but its the snout end that connects to the driveshaft. That part had an end with less clearance to insert the drive shaft so we had to swap it out. Which part would you guess had the vibration if you had to?
So you live in Vermont? I assume you do because of the plate unless you bought it and took it to a different state. I live in Vermont and thought it was interesting to see the plate on the limo.
That part is called the extension housing. I'll bet the bushing inside that housing is causing your problem.
The bellhousing is the end of the transmission that bolts to the engine.
The extension housing was swapped from the old tranny that had no vibration issues. Do you think it could have been damaged in the swap? Or would you lean now towards the drive shaft being knocked out of balance.
wildstang: I bought the limo in CT. I drove it back to NC planning on having fun with my family driving it around. Everything else on it has been pretty cool!
