in my regasket thread in the 4.9 forum ive documented changing water pumps since i yanked the motor to reseal it etc. Should have never changed the water pump that was on there..it wasnt leaking but one of those, while im right here kinda things...
Anyway ive tried 3 different brands of "new" pumps, all three have done the exact same thing right after install.
water pump #3 leaking out front seal/ weephole, this last time it ended up costing me a radiator because i got in a hurry and jammed a ratchet into one of the rows...
Thinking of trying a reman instead of new china junk
Are there any motorcraft water pumps out there available, or has anyone had recent success with a certain brand water pump? thanks for any help! getting tired of draining and saving coolant and wasting my time changing junk parts.
What brands have you been using and where are you buying them?
We put Gates pumps on everything at work unless they’re not available for some reason, then we usually go to the dealer. As long as they’re properly torqued and the gasket sealing surfaces are clean they don’t have any problems.
this has been from rock auto- which i have always had great luck with up until this, and the defective radiator they sent to replace the one i busted myself( they are giving a refund for this)
first was a cardone - ive had good luck with in past
Next was gates - always had good luck with their products
next was ac delco - always had good luck with theirs
Radiator cap is a recent stant 13 psi
thermostat is a stant 195 and it never sticks, operates on the very low end of normal on the gauge
i should add they all appear to be exactly the same generic cast chinajunk pump, none have had markings to differentiate them from the others, everyone i have to bend the heater hose output slightly to fit etc
gates has this in their warranty verbage
"A small amount of coolant leaking from the weep hole is normal. Small drips are OK. Longer streams or continuous leaking may indicate a problem. OE manufacturers developed the weep chamber as a way to hide the small drips so pumps are not prematurely determined to be failing. Those drips will remain in the chamber and evaporate as the engine heats up.":
This drips enough to run down the lower radiator hose and drip on the ground, and after a week of driving i have to add coolant, like every single one.
I also re-replaced the lower radiator hose just because i thought it was leaking from there until looking closer i could see the oxidation trail coming out of the weep hole
at this point im at a loss, where do you get your gates pumps?
anyone else had decent luck lately?
Our primary source is Arnold Motor Supply. I can’t see your location info because I’m on my phone, but they operate in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and Missouri.
After two quick NAPA water pump failures from pumps bought in 2014 I told myself I would not go that route again.
The new Gates water pump on RockAuto was $23.00, the AC Delco "Professional" was the most expensive for the big blocks at $49.00, which is exactly why I chose that.
The fact "Professional" is in the title, and that the Delco was the most expensive, IS the selling point.

i find this song-and-dance disturbing, coming from a company that i (used to) trust. so in 1920 we could build water pumps that didn't dribble coolant from new, but in 2019 it's no longer feasible ? my b.s. alarm is jangling like crazy.
