battery positive cable had large amount of corrosion . I got out the baking powder and hot water and poured it on . then rinsed with fresh water , removed cables and cleaned . after putting it back together , it would not start acted like a bad connection , checked every thing and found battery only showed 7 volts , jumped it and with engine running it shows 13.8 volts . shut it off and batter showed 9 volts , checked at cables and at posts , why would cleaning the terminals kill the battery,
I suppose it's possible, in the process of removing or reinstalling the battery terminals, the flexing of the battery posts somehow caused a marginal strap connection internal to the battery to break or get damaged.
Let this be a lesson. Procrastination and wishful thinking might l have really paid off here. Just think, if you would have ignored the battery issue the old truck might still be starting.
You might even have been able to stretch it out through the winter.....
So, I'm inspired. I'm going to not rush right out and clean my battery posts.....
My truck is dead in the garage too. Won't start. Battery is fully charged. All I did was tighten up the connections to the solenoid. I've been slowly tracking down the problem, and today my mechanic friend says there is a bad connection in the starter. Go figure.
Good luck Dave. Do you by any chance have a new "project" you are messing with? You've had a little break--I hope you are getting back in the game.
I've seen corrosion go way down inside the cables. Just because you got the terminals clean doesn't mean the entire cable is ok. Check for a drop across the cables. Not sure why it happened after cleaning but, worth a check.
I've had very similar unexplainable things happen to me over the years at my place. Life is too short. Just get another one and live to fight another day. I had a lawnmower battery do the exact same thing this past summer.
I caught a local auto parts store going out of business and bought an Optima for half price. Still $130 but no more corroded cables. Just a thought if you have to replace your battery. Good luck, Steve
