Starter grinding, possibly wrong PN

Hey everyone,

My starter (installed by PO) grinds and I'm curious if I have the wrong one, or just a worn ring gear.

PN is C7AF-1101-C which some casual googling turns up a 289 mustang starter, but (maybe) interchangeable...not sure.

I'm running a 360 with a t18 in a 75 swb 2wd. I think I've got a stock (184 tooth?) flywheel but PO wasn't all that bright, so there's always a risk it could be something wonky.

I assume numberdummy probably has the answer here but I'm curious if there is anything else to look out for since these things seem to be a bit tricky and not well understood. Specifically, should I even trust rockauto to get it right, considering they don't have a motorcraft PN on anything they sell for the FE

ID number: C7AF-11001-C which some casual googling turns up a 289 it's an FE starter!

ID number: C7AF-11001-C = Ford part number: C3OZ-11002-C .. FE starter. 1963/76 all FE engines.

FE/FT starters have 3 mounting holes, all other V8's have 2 mounting holes. So there's no way that a 289, 351W, 460 or any other V8 starter w/2 holes will fit an FE engine.

Look at the starter drive, it may have badly worn or chipped teeth.

Flywheel ring gear may have chipped teeth, if the starter drive lands on a place where the teeth are chipped, the starter usually won't grind, it will make a whirring noise.

Interesting. The concoursmustang.com guys must be wrong

So is there a "wrong" FE starter? Or will anything that bolts up work.

I saw another one of your posts cautioning against someone trying to use a FT started on an FE...

Im curious to know what my PN is actually for

It's not a part number! I told you it wasn't in post #2.
The wrong FE starter is 1958/62, has the HUGE Bendix inertia starter drive, the flywheel has 153 teeth. These FE's were only installed in cars.

C7AF-11002-C is one of the ID engineering numbers for the C3OZ-11002-C FE starter. Another is C6AF-11001-A

There are no Ford part numbers marked on parts after 1956, just casting or ID engineering numbers, when applicable.
