hi everyone my wife bought me a79 f150 the truck has 67000 miles original. the truck sat for almost 2yrs .i noticed when i put the thing in reverse it makes a loud clunk just going into reverse.this guy told me my rear is going up and he would put in a good dana rear?? and wouldnt charge for labor if i let him have the so called bad rear??? COME to find out this guy is into hot rods and aparently the ford 9inch rear is popular rear ??????.is there anyway EASY to check my self not really a mechanic have done own oil changes shocks ect just your routine stuff. the truck it self runs EXCELLANT.ALSO there is a vibration at around 55-60 mph just put new tires and had them balanced but that didnt cure the vibration
Easiest way is to first get under and turn the driveshaft by hand, see if there is any play. Then lift the rear of the truck and turn the wheels by hand. Look for looseness going forward to back and forward again. The 9" inch rears are very popular race rears, but they change the internals. Is the vibration 55-60 and above? or just in that range?
remember when checking u-joints put the truck in neutral and BLOCK the wheels check the hanger bearing if so equiped also another thing does the vibration go away if you put it in neutral when going hi-way speeds?
I'm with beartracks. You probably just need U-joints. Mine starting that old 'clunking' sound in reverse and it just needed the rear U-joint replaced. I went ahead and replaced the others too just because I had the driveline down and out and also replaced the 'carrier bearing' too. It takes about an hour overall, if you have the right tools. If you don't have a press to put in the end caps of your U-joints, you can use the right size socket and a vise.
