I recently did a complete overhaul of my rear brakes on my 95 Ranger and I have had issues with the left rear drum brake dragging periodically. I can sometimes drive it a day or two without any issues, then I'll be moving down the road and the truck will start to vibrate from the dragging. I have all new hardware (wheel cylinders, springs, self-adjuster) so I'm at a bit of a loss of what is causing this. My only thought is that the parking brake is sticking; if I just leave the truck in reverse when parking it I don't seem to have the problem. However my driveway is on a bit of a slope (the carport is relatively level) and I'm not totally comfortable parking it without having the brakes set.
I haven't had a chance to dig through my shop manual yet, so I have a couple of questions. First, is the parking brake cable adjustable? Second, are the cables known to bind on these trucks as they wear?
might be moisture getting in there through the hole that the parking brake cable goes through on the back plate. try smearing some silicone on all the places that moisture could be getting in.
I had to replace an emergency cable at like 40 or 50K
Hey Bart,
My truck went through only a couple of MN winters before the driver side e-brake cable started rusting/sticking.. Was suprised to find out it only cost like 30 some bucks at ford.. Never had a problem with the passenger side cable. There is no adjustment of the cables as far as I know.
