Operating temp — how hot?

‘95 5.8 — rebuilt, .030 over, 10.5:1 flat-tops (in a ‘52 F3, btw).
Motor runs great, and is dead-on consistent at 220° once at temp, whether idling or pulling mountain passes at altitude. My friend says it’s too hot, but my old Jeep Cherokee was exactly the same: 220 all day, every day… though obviously not a V8.

Thoughts? How hot are some of you running with 5.8s?

PS: E4OD (with tranny cooler) and (stock) clutch fan with an aluminum shroud.

Thanks in advance.

My lightly modded 5.8 (GT40s, 9.25 to1, 11* basic timing, stock radiator) in the deep south with Taurus 2 speed fan, 195* stat & mechanical gauge w/sender in t-stat housing;

200*-205* spring, fall, winter. 210* summer w/AC running. Sometimes touching 215* with extended idling in traffic. Maybe seen 220* once or twice in the last 3 years.

Doesn't sound too bad for the compression.

Good to know you're up & running with your project.

Are you measuring with gun or gauge?

220 isn't terrible, I like to keep mine 200 or below.

I'll have to try to find notes/doc for the t-stat, as I honestly don't recall — I wanna say it was a 195.
Measuring via gauge/sender.

Hope to finally get around to posting a build thread (or at least some pix) over in the 48-56 forum… just putting some finishing touches on the truck now. (Thanks again for your early help here on this forum. )

Sounds like I could be a little cooler I guess based on these replies.

In this weather, I'd expect to be able to see the thermostat open and then it float around the stat temp on the gauge.

Get some real readings as to the actual temp it's running and verify that the stat is opening all the way.

There may be an air bubble or restriction etc.

Hey, you're a mile high whereas I'm at about 700ft (one of highest areas in state) above sea level. Makes a difference.

Also I'm betting whatever you've got for a rad, it's got to be smaller in total area than one of ours, unless it's 3 or 4 core.

Will be looking forward to your build thread.
