Does anyone know if there is an after-market wiper motor and switch that will drive the wipers in my '90 F150 4.9L Ext. Cab?
That is the only thing I don't like about my old girl. We don't get a lot of rain but when we do it is frequently just enough to cloud the windshield. I hate to run the slow speed wipers when there is little water on the window.
Along the same lines, I'm old and arthritic and can't get in and out as easily as I used to. Is there an after-market granny bar that can be added to the driver's door?
The intermittent switch (if you don't already have one, as above) can be sourced from a 80-91 (if I recall) F-series or bronco, just find one and swap out.
Mine has intermittent wipers, but still, there are times when you want just one swipe. GM used to have this option on some cars in the 60s, before intermittent wipers were offered by GM. It was labeled "Mist".
I added a "Mist" button to mine. That may suffice for you. It's been so long ago that I added this, I don't remember which wire, but if you remove the wiper switch (leaving the plug attached), and with the key on, touch each wire with a test light with the other end of the test light grounded, you will hit a wire that will make the wipers swipe. Just add a little momentary-contact button (mine is in the right hand lower corner of the square that surrounds the wiper switch) and then splice it to this wire on the switch and then the other contact to ground, you can then press the button momentarily and get one swipe of the wipers.

I don't even know where to look for such things.
Some years back, I bought an add-on intermittent wiper control kit from Auto Zone (or some similar parts store)...put it on my '85 Ranger. It worked great for the 10 years or so that I had the truck...wasn't that costly. Tomorrow I'll dig and see if I can find the paperwork. About the "granny bar"...I added one to my '97 F350 4X4...I'm old and arthritic, too...maybe I can find the old invoice on that. In either case, you shouldn't have much trouble searching online to find what you need.
I remember an infomercial about a handle that you put in the door lock striker and then removed before closing the door - might be worth picking up if you use different vehicles often.
The wiper motors are the same for intermittent or standard. The switch is different, but it and its companion harness & the box containing the timing circuitry will plug directly into your dash harness. Other potential donors include a number of 1970s cars including T-Birds, Cougars, etc. Although those are about as rare now in the yards as poultry's enamel covered instruments of mastication. [Hen's teeth] Parenthetically, there is a now older movie about the gentleman who invented the intermittent wiper & how Ford kind of did him wrong regarding the intellectual property. It is titled, "Flash of Genius".
