Heater issue

I have a 2003 Ford Explorer 4.0 160k miles
when I start my explorer from a cold start on a 30 degree morning I leave it running 10+ min to try and get it warm but when I go to the explorer. It’s still ice cold.
but if I drive it for 5 min it will start to heat up and continue to heat even while sitting at idle it will stay warm idk what going on

Have you checked your coolant level? What does the temp gauge show when you get in the Explorer to drive it?

When you cold start the truck do you have the temperature setting on heat and the fan turned to setting 2 or 3? You want to be sure the climate control is calling for the heater control valve to open (although I don't recall if that was still used in 2003) and you don't want to blow air through the heater core so fast that it's further cooling the not yet hot coolant and air. Also, the heater core hoses sit pretty high so if the coolant level is not full, an idling engine may not get coolant to circulate through the heater core.

I will. CHeck the coolant today because my driveway is a small hill so that may be the cause

ok so I checked the coolant level and it’s about 2-3 inches from empty so I’m gonna fill that and hope it fixes my issue

You might want to try not using the highest fan setting at first since that may be moving air across the heater core too quickly for it to fully warm up the air before your engine and coolant are up to temp. You may also want to check the temperature of the heater hoses flowing in to and out of the heater core relative to the upper radiator hose as the truck idles to see if the flow through the heater core seems to be good. If one of the hoses is noticeably warmer than the other, there may be a restriction in your heater core. Back flushing the core may restore your good heat in that case.
