I have a 66 f-100 custom cab. I just got back to it after a long time I’m working on rewiring it the new dash harness has two turn indicator lights my dash cluster has only one hole for the indicator light. Can I just splice one of the lights to make it work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jerry
The way that single indicator lights work is quite brilliant. Each side of the filament of the indicator is wired to the front turn signal leads (one to left, one right). This way, the lamp illuminates because one lead is receiving power from the turn signal, and the other lead grounds through the filament of the opposite signal bulb. This works because the turn signal bulb's filament is higher resistance than the indicator bulb's filament, so the indicator lights.
The really brilliant part is the ability to determine which signal bulb is out by the way the indicator lights, front AND rear.
Indicator does not light on left turn, means the right front bulb is out; opposite is true, also.
Indicator flashes fast on left turn, means left rear bulb is out; opposite is, again, true.
It is really a better system, unless you are the sort who just cannot recall which way you are signalling, and NEED that reminder of a left, or right, dash indicator.
As to wiring, just connect one lead to the right front signal lead, the other side to left front. Easy-peasy, and the wires are right there out of the column.
Kinda a different, but related question I have always wanted to ask. '66 F250, custom cab. The right dash turn indicator flashes for both right and left turns. The left is high beam indicator. My wiring diagram shows a right turn, left turn, and a high beam lamp.
Did Ford forget to put the high beam indicator on the custom dash so they used the left turn?
Nope. Many Ford were built with only a single TS indicator bulb. I've had Chryslers that were built that way, too, as well as a number of motorcycles.
You were looking at the standard cab wiring diagram.
I completely thought that this was some kind of ground problem with my 65 f100 custom cab. Apparently it's normal?

Yes, 1965/66 F100/250 2WD Custom Cab trucks (sweep speedometer) combined the two turn signal indicators into one indicator and used the other turn indicator space for the high-beam indicator. Round speedometer trucks did not combine them. All they did on the sweep speedometer trucks was use one extra unique jumper that both indicators plugged into that provided the one contact point. Otherwise, same wiring harness as round speedometer trucks.
