A spacer doesn't change the load on the stud unless there are insufficient threads to engage. It does alter the geometry, specifically the scrub radius. It's possible it could decrease the scrub radius and actually make it easier to steer. I used spacers (albeit thin ones) when road racing my Mustang to dial in the scrub radius. I'm pretty sure I put way more load on my front wheels/tires/suspension than any street driven car would ever do without going to jail considering I had P275 front tires with a UTQG of around 100.
