Tire Rubbing Issue

Hi all! Just bought a 1963 F100 stepside and couldn’t be more excited. After driving it a bit, I have noticed the pitman arm / tie rod connection is rubbing the inside of my driver front tire when turned hard to the left. It has disc brakes on it, with 235/75/R16 cragar wheels (not sure on offset). Any ideas on why this is rubbing? Wrong tire size? You’re help is appreciated.

Jon

There should be adjusters on the spindle carrier that will limit the turning radius, depending on the year the front end is from.

You've got non-standard brakes and non-standard wheels/tires.

This is very likely why it's rubbing. Either change the wheels/tires, or adjust as suggested, though your turning radius will increase.

I think you meant decrease.

No. If he limits the amount the wheels turn, the turning radius will increase.
'Turning radius' refers to the amount of space required to turn the truck.

You are right. I did not equate it to a larger circle, but less wheel travel side to side.

What about a wheel spacer? I don't have any experience with them, but they would be an easy solution rather than limiting my steering.

Wheel spacer moves the wheel and tire out but be careful, do not use one over 3/4" or you could risk damage to the truck. I would not use them for heavy highway driving.

My thought behind the wheel spacer was to move the wheel out. I was thinking 1" but not sure if that would be enough to stop the rubbing.

A wheel spacer is, IMHO, a very bad idea. It puts excessive loads on the studs, possibly leading to breakage.
It alters the geometry, leading to weird and possibly harder steering. Also the altered geometry can cause odd feedback over bumps and on slipperly pavement.

But, it IS your truck, proceed as you see fit.

I appreciate the feedback. Seems like the best options are changing the wheels or adjusting the steering.

How is the steering stops adjusted on these trucks?

It's a bolt, with a locknut.

I got the steering stops adjusted. The unadjusted side gets two full turns and the newly adjusted side gets approximately 1.75 turns with no rubbing.

Thanks to all for the input, it is greatly appreciated!
