Driving down the freeway at 70 in the RWD Ex and I hear a loud pop and then a consistent popping sound. I pull over and conclude it's a blown spark plug as I'm smelling fuel and it has a dead miss. I drove it home about 4 miles (10-12 minutes in the neighborhood). I intend to take it to my trustworthy local Ford dealer tomorrow and let them deal with it.
My question is: Is it safe to drive another 15 minutes/<5 miles to my local dealer in this condition or should I have it dead-hauled on a wrecker? There has been no further changes since the plug initially blew.
Do NOT use a Helicoil, Sav-A-Thread, or Dormans, they are highly susceptible to re-blowing. More than half of the inquiries for the rental of my TimeSert kit have come from these owners.
The following are known to be PERMANENT repairs: Lock-n-Stitch (Ford-approved), CalVan/SnapOn, or TimeSert.

No helicoils...please.
CalVan was the other name in addition to Timesert. Do it right IF it needs it.
.... If stripped, I would toss a helicoil in and put the spark plug back in and call it done. ....
Timesert has a repair kit, #5553, for stripped holes that have not been repaired before.
They also carry a Big-Sert kit that will repair holes with failed helicoils.

That's actually a very outdated description. The "normal" Timesert 51459 inserts included in the Ford 5553 kit are already "Bigserts" and will repair most re-blown helicoil failures. For extreme cases, they do offer a "triple oversize" kit that handle holes too large for the 51459 insert alone. Once the oversize insert is installed, a 51457 or 51459 insert is then nested inside it.
My Dad suggested helicoil decades ago, used it once on a head stud. Worked great for 20k miles and last I heard that car had gained another 80k miles after I sold it.
Used them a few times at work, not auto related.
Was not aware they had a bad rep for certain applications. I'll keep it in mind if the situation ever comes up again.
I used the Calvan kit to replace the Dorman insert the PO had installed. It was a pretty straightforward easy process provided you take your time blowing out the metal shavings and closely follow the instructions and online tutorials. I did the whole thing in about 20 minutes. And, give the JB Weld used to cement in the insert the full curing time.

I asked the dealer's service advisor I'm working with if they use any of these and he just said, "We use Pin Lock." (Pin Lok or Pin Loc??) They guarantee it for two years unlimited mileage.
Is Pin Lock another name for one of the three mentioned by project SHO89? Is Pin Lock acceptable?

Service Advisor tells me the brand is Full Torque from Ford Motor Co. sold only to dealers. I see that Full Torque = Lock 'n Stitch. The dealer wants $885.00 to repair the spark hole hole which includes a new coil (recently replaced coil got broken when plug blew) and a new spark plug. Yeehaw.

Lock 'N Stitch are top of the line. I posted about them well over a decade ago in the Lightning forum.
$885 is steep. I had an independent shop install a Time Cert for $200 bucks when my L blew a plug.

PS - You already know about the helicoil. I've been posting about them being wrong for this application from a time before FTE. Helicoil has never been the correct choice for this application.
