The wheel bearing in my 05 fx4 is shot. mechanic told me you have to replace to whole hub assembly. is it hard to do? can i do it myself? i'm not mechanic but have changed out a few things before. alternator, fuel injector on an older truck, random stuff like that. I am looking online here and see a lot of different options for hub assembly's.is there anything i need to look at besides making sure its 4x4 and has the right studs and has the abs option?
is it true that i have to replace the whole hub assembly or might a different mechanic change out the bearing alone?
Hubs on 4 x 4 are replaced as a unit ( with new bearings).. You need a variety of sockets, and the bolts holding the hub to the spindle can be TIGHT or Lock TITE so you might need impact or heavy 6 pt wrenches you can SMACK with hammer.. Its not an easy job, but not real difficult., depending on your skills....... go to youtube and look for a movie... all trucks are basically the same.
hey thanks man. I went to ford and was able to find the hub i needed for 177 canadian, which was suprising because it was a ford part and everywhere else i looked it was at least 180-250. was surprised to find though that the sway bar links were so much!
my 4x4 has been wonky lately, it will go on sometimes and not others. the light will flash on the dash but then go off. is this due to my wheel bearing being so loose?
the 4 x 4 on your year truck should engage by a IEW at the wheel end... this is a vacuum piston arrangement behind the hub... you can get corrosion / water / crud sticking the piston . you can also have a vacuum leak which cases the piston not to move. Normally the 4 x 4 is ENGAGED and when you start truck and have vacuum, it pulls the piston into 2 x 4 operation.. Do you have an GRINDING ? With a 14 year old truck, if you have not worked on the 4 x 4 IWE before, then it might be a good time to cleanup the parts when doing the hub... Probably have some you tube videos... also I can post a link to TESTING 4 x 4
