Need some advice concerning my 03 Ex with 215k miles that has developed a noise in the rear end. The noise is minor but wasn’t comfortable with it. I had it checked out by my local mechanic and noticed there was some minor pitting on the ring and piñon gear. He suggested replacing the rear end with a used one. Not really comfortable with that option. My question is what would be the reasonable cost to rebuilding my rear end? Has anyone else had this kind of issue?
Thanks in advance.
depends what needs replacing
r&p, bearing kit, setup you are looking at $1000 to $1500
My mechanic has found a used rear end with only 50K miles on it but wants $2200 to install it. Seems to me I can rebuild mine for less than that and I’ll know exactly what I have. Just needed to have some ideas of what it would cost to rebuild mine.
that is absurd, a pick n pull recycle yard sells axles for $150 and they go on sale for 1/2 price on holidays.
installation is no way no how more then 3hrs so at a shop rate of $125 per hour ( dealers rate ) or many indys at $95 per hour, i would say your mechanic is raping you

That's a lot.
When I was axle shopping, used axles from junkyards were in the $500-$800 range for me to pick up - they pull..
I think the u-pull-it was close to $250 by the time they added everything in. I wasn't too thrilled about that because these things are HEAVY.
I bought a 4.30 LS rear form $300 private party with calipers and rotors. I have not put it in yet.
I got quotes of $1000 - $1200 to put a 4.56 in my 3.73 rear axle complete with bearings, seals, etc but no limited slip.
As I recall, I rebuild kit runs about $300, gears about $300, Track Loc rebuild kit $300.
It adds up quick plus you need some tools you might not have if you're doing it yourself.
And if you have an open rear and want a LS, a TruTrac is another $650.
I'd buy a used one again before trying my own gear swap.
Now I'm looking for a Dana 60 full float to put in my van and have rebuilt with deep gears. Van has D60 semi-float 3.73 open. The 5.4 needs more gear when towing my toy hauler and semi-float in a 3/4 or 1 -ton borders on criminal but that's a whole different thread/forum

Thanks for your input!! I’m definitely going to get another price quote for a rebuild!! Lots of information as well as insight for my rear end issue. I’ve had my 03 since 05 and with 212K miles this is pretty much the only issue I’ve had with my truck. Thanks again for your help.
I bought both a front Dana 50 and a rear Sterling 10.5" already setup with the 4.88 gears I wanted (swapping away from my stock 3.73s) with a locker in the rear complete out to the calipers and lug nuts for $1200. Deals are out there. When planning for the gear change I had gotten shop quotes of $2000 to $2400 for the 4.88s into my factory axles.

make sure you check the BOM or dig deep enough to correctly identify the axle, many vans use the outward similar but quirky Dana 61 that uses an odd spaced ring gear and they do not interchange. many a person has brought home what they thought was a desirable 35 spline full float 60 only to find out it was a dana 61 they cant regear it as they thought.
I was looking to swap out my 3.73 for a 4.30. Local shops quoted between 900-1200. I plan on doing it but I'm waiting till camping and towing season starts up again. Like they said, your mechanic is looking to put his kid through Harvard on your dime.

I'd get it done before camping season starts back up, most new gears are recommended to get 500 to 1K miles on them before seeing towing loads.

Yep - I love my van and the rear axles are quirky. Weird spline count on the axles, also.
Mine's a 60 for sure. You'd think something spec'd for old school Hemi cars would be OK in this application but it's ready for it's 2nd set of pinion bearings in 250000 miles.
I ought to just put a 10.5 or a 14-bolt in it and be done with it.
