For example, I just made this up. What does it decode to? F26HKO41441
Right above the VIN is the date of manufacture...
01/71, 06/72, and 06/72 on the three of mine.
Not to mention that we have ND who can decode a VIN in his sleep whenever someone asks.
I was just trying to help the kid learn the ropes. Kinda like your tag of Number Dummy implies.
I heard that line from the Ford parts counter plenty of times.
It taught me to show up with the right number the next time...
I just remembered his name for some reason. Bob Brock. Damned nice guy. Late 80's or early 90's at Jim Babbitt Ford in Flagstaff.

But if the production date is 8/76 - 9/76 - 10/76 - 11/76 or 12/76 would a
that knows very little, think that this is a 1976 or 1977?----------
The Babbitt Brothers originally owned a trading post, department/hardware store in Flagstaff, then became a Ford dealer in the 19teens, later added additional dealerships in other AZ locals.
I haven't been to Flag in 30 years, so what Babbitt owns now beside the dealership, I dunno.
I, myself, have never run into one of these trucks that did not have the manufacture date on the VIN tag.
Bucco now knows to open the door and look at the tag. (Unless he is somewhere in Tennessee where the hillbillies can be very psycho about curious people).
He also knows that if he runs into one of the rare trucks without the date that he can grab the VIN and ask here where ND will, as always, graciously decode it for him.
As far as the Babbitt holdings go. After Bruce was given the position of Secretary of the Interior the rest of the Babbitt family sold most of their lands and buildings. They sold the most everything except the Ford dealerships.
If you visited about that time then you must have met Bob. I screwed up though. It wasn't Bob Brock. Brock was Bob's son. It was Bob, Sue, Brock, and their little girl. (As often as they were in my home you'd think that I'd remember their last name.)
You probably got a chance to tour Jim's private garage right across the street and saw Jim's personal toy.
