Windshield removal tips?

Anyone got any? Going to tackle this today or tomorrow. Original plan is to pop the chrome trim off and cut the seal with a razor. I have never removed a windshield. It's in good shape so kinda scared to break it.

I have done that many times but be real careful with the chrome it helps lock the seal in and can be b$tch to get out, I usually go around the outside of the chrome then remove the chrome

I don't have the stainless or chrome trim around my windshield but like you it was my first time taking one out and I cut the seal out to get it out. I was nervous about breaking the windshield being 40+ years old and knowing it isn't tempered and having bad experience with glass breaking in the past. The advice I can give you is take your time and go slow and have someone there helping you when you go to pop it out. You'll be surprised if it's the original seal and windshield how stuck in it will be. I would worry about breaking it while cutting it out but more when you go to bumping it with your palm to get the seal away from the cab. Good luck watch some videos online I'm sure there's plenty out there maybe even some for our 73-79 trucks?

If you can have an extra set of hands, that works better. One thing that helps when doing it alone is to get a pair of suction cups for removal and install. This will help with to remove it without wrenching your back and install it with even pressure. If I remember correctly, I bought mine at Harbor Freight.

Cut the seal from the inside of the cab. I tried both ways first cutting the outside of the seal at the wrecking yard and the inside on the broken window in my wife's truck- way easier from the inside.

Got it out. Cut the outside first. Then the inside. It lifted right out. Tricky part was climbing off my hood while holding the glass.

Good deal. Have you got the replacement seal yet? If not remember the seal is different for trucks with chrome trim and those without. I got mine from LMC in their seal kit and it was a bit tight for the glass guys to put it back in. Not sure where LMC sources their seals from but just a heads up if you haven't got one yet

You cannot remove the stainless steel windshield reveal mouldings from the weatherstrip, until the glass is removed.

When originally installing the mouldings, they are inserted into the weatherstrip FIRST .. then the weatherstrip is installed on the windshield.

The EZ way to remove the windshield is to cut the weatherstrip inside the cab with an Xacto knife or similar.

Come reinstall time, soapy water, suction cups, and patience. U tube up on the "rope install trick". https://www.steelerubber.com/ for a seal. Looks like you did take the inside the cab, top seal retaining bar off.

I saw the rope trick. My window does not have the trim. I dont know why I thought it did.

I suggest using thin vinyl coated wire. A little more money, but you will not get the fray or break that can happen with the rope or twine.
