66 Tail Light Wiring

Hey folks.

I pulled out the old wiring and tail lights on my '66 and ordered these new ones. The wiring colors are different and it appears I'll have to splice the new light wiring onto the old connectors so I'm hoping some of y'all will be able to help me make sense of what I'm looking at. I picked up the tail lights from C&G ford parts and the wiring from CJ Pony.

These are the back ends of the new wiring that I bought. I'm assuming the brown wires are my running lights and the yellow/green wires are the turn signals.

Here is one of the new tail lights. A sticker on the box identifies the green wire as the stop/turn signal and the black wire as the running light.

This is one of the old tail lights. Both of them have this red/brown setup. I'm guessing that red is the turn signal and that brown is the running light.

I'm also curious what y'all have done about back up lights for these trucks. It occurred to me to pick up some small white lights to put somewhere on the back, but I'm not sure how I'd go about wiring that up.

I’m glad u brought this up. I have a 66 with a flatbed and I plan to switch the tail lights to the period correct setup u have here. I’m sure someone will chime in soon.

These "shield type" tail lamps were installed on 1955/66: Flaresides, all trucks with flat/stake beds and Cab & Chassis. There were no backup lights for trucks until 1967.

There are different colored wires, due to the years/models these lamps were used on.

1967/72 Flareside, flat/stake beds and Cab & Chassis trucks used a new tail lamp design that had the backup lamp lens incorporated within the red lens (see pic):

I wired these Led projector lights (8 t0tal) into the rear bumper and pulled the power to the switch from the light switch.

Did you wire them somehow so they only come on when you throw it in reverse or do you have to manually trigger them every time?

It's a manual thing. The NP435 has no switch for reverse.

The PO had already installed one of these on my truck. It was in poor condition so I ordered a new one from LMC with a new gasket. I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be equal in quality to the original Ford part. The only difference the glass lens says LMC on it instead of FORD. I have a C6 trans so it was easy to wire it into the circuit but I did add a switch so it could be turned on at any time. It is bright enough to give a little help backing up. https://www.lmctruck.com/1957-72-for...amp-components

I bought similar lights from C&G. I didn't buy a new harness going back to them but you'll have three wires going back, brown green and yellow. Green and yellow are the right and left turn signals respectively. The colors will go to the green wires coming out of the lights and the brown will go to the black wire. Make sure you have a good ground from the light housing to the chassis, if your mounting bolts are clean that will do.

I don't use reverse lights.

Christmas, are those LEDs bright enough to help you see when its dark?

Crop duster, I presume you just ran the wiring across the top and down the A pillar into the dash?

Put it this way, you don't want to be the guy following if they are on. No I just ran the wire through the firewall and down the frame rail. The switch is

under dash with a indicator to tell me they are on.

That's a great way to put it. I'll do some looking and see what my options might be for something like that. Having a flareside gives me fewer places to stash things like lights other than the ridiculously overbuilt bumper, so I'll get creative.
