Getting ready to replace the harmonic balancer and front crankshaft seal on my 86 with 5.0 since the seal is leaking. Haven't taken it apart yet but I'm sure there's probably a groove worn into the balancer also which is why I'll replace it. Question is it really necessary to remove the radiator as the repair manual states or is there ample room to do it with it in?
How many miles on this engine? If it has a lot, I would go ahead and drain the coolant, pull the waterpump, the damper, the timing cover, and replace the timing chain. It makes it's much easier to change the front seal this way. And if you have drained the coolant, might as well take the radiator, the hardest part to that would be getting the large radiator hoses unstuck from the water pump and the thermostat housing.
I would take a look at this engine, if it looks like it has never been touched, I would tear it down on the front. By the way, if the rubber looks good on the balancer, you can get a repair sleeve to repair the groove on the balancer. They are easy to install and work very well. The store has them also.
Water pump already replaced. Turning the crank back and forth shows no slack in the timing chain when watching the distributor rotor. There were papers in the glove box when I bought the truck indicating that the engine had been replaced.
To be safe that the puller does not go thru the radiator I would pull it.
Sometimes when doing a water pump it is best to cover the radiator with cardboard so you don't put the fan & pump thru it.
