Dome light 2005 ranger

Dome light will not come on when the door is open or by the dimmer rolled all the way up. The door open light comes on the dash when both doors are open and dings. I’ve put in two new bulbs in it. Checked the fuses. I unscrewed the 3 screws on the light and took it out and only saw one wire terminal with a blue wire. Is there supposed to be more than one wire terminal?

Welcome to FTE.

I see you don't have any replies yet, so I'll see if I can get things started.

Did the problem come about suddenly after some event ?

Yes there is just one BK / LB wire to the dome lamp. It comes from the interior battery saver relay on the low current board in the Smart Junction Box (SJB). The relay actuating coil is protected by a 15 amp fuse F-2.13, so check to make sure that fuse isn't blown because if it is the dash lights thumb wheel dimmer & switch also won't be powered to turn the dome lamp on either & you say you also have that problem.
If all that is ok try giving the relay a thump to see if it'll wake up & close its contacts to turn the dome lamp on.
Some beginning thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.

Thank you for your reply! I just recently purchased this truck to drive back and forth to work to save on some gas. I’m very green when it comes to working on trucks so I’m learning as I go. I watched a few YouTube videos saying it could possibly be the GEM located behind the radio. I removed the radio and there is no GEM where it says it’s supposed to be. It has the ‘slits’ (don’t know the word for it) where it’s supposed to side in. There wasn’t any lose cords hanging in there that’s supposed to be connected to it. The person I bought it from said it was a fleet truck if that tells you anything. Like I said I’m learning as I go. As you suggested I will check the fuses again and give the relay a look over. I will post a picture of behind the radio where the GEM is supposed to be if you would like to see what I was trying to say above. Thank you and will reply when I’ve tried what you suggested.

^^^ That's because in Y2004 the GEM was integrated with the interior fuse block, both got relocated, and it was defined as the SJB, a programmable module. There is no stand alone GEM on 2004+ Rangers. Those slits you are referring to are most likely for the 4x4 module given where you're looking, and since the slot is vacant you must have a 2WD. Lastly and FWIW, the GEM on older vehicles is located behind the 4x4 module and above the gas pedal. If I were diagnosing the cause of the problem, I would use a DVM and verify there is/is not voltage at the dome light connector when the door is open and same when the dash switch is used. If there was no voltage, for kicks and knowing a bit about leakage history, I'd pop the cover off of the SJB and look for the presence of water/water tracks in the dirt around it. There are two relays on the SJB that could fail (although very infrequently) and probably don't like moisture (SJB is known to do weird things when it's seen water). First relay is for the courtesy li8ghts and it's on a 10M timer, second is the battery saver realy, it's on a 30M timer and power from it feeds the courtesy light relay and dome light.
