So I've recently done a lot of work on my truck and had it running perfect for about five weeks. Then the other day the truck started to backfire and stall out of nowhere. This problem is intermittent and doesn't happen consistently. I tried to check the timing again so I disconnected the spout connector and the truck runs perfect, but when i plug the spout connector back in it stalls. I replaced the computer and icm which did nothing. Maybe the distributor?
I have seen threads on this before and there are several things that can cause this. The pip in the distributor is one of them. I would suggest you run your diagnostic codes to see if the issue can be pinpointed more specifically. Did you just recently replace the distributor when you "did a lot of work" on the truck? Did you replace the ICM with the same color that was in it? Did you put thermal paste on the ICM when you installed it? Did your new PCM have the same exact numbers as the old one? Sandy

Yes I did replace the distributor recently. I also ran the codes and it threw codes for lean in banks 1 and 2. The spark advance on the live data jumps from like 11 to 28 in a matter of seconds at idle.
That is normal. The computer takes control when the spout is in. With it out is when you set your base timing and it should not jump. Is the distributor or computer Cardone?

Should it be advancing that much? The timing mark is bouncing back and forth when I put a timing light on it. It's almost like it advances too much and then dies. The computer and distributor are both Cardone remans
Yes it could depending on the info the computer is getting. You can only correctly set timing with the spout out. I have had good luck with the Cardone computers but have never used one of their distributors. Have you run codes since the problem arose? You should be getting something on codes.

I set the initial timing with it out. And then when I put it back in it starts to run rough and stall. I ran the codes and only have to two lean codes, nothing else.
