Overdrive off is blinking

Used 4wd low today, truck seems to not want to get out of 2nd gear ! Thought it was getting stuck in 4wd. Went through the steps to get it out of 4wd. Looks to be in 2wd but still not going into overdrive. Overdrive off stops blinking for a mile or so then starts up again. Hoping it’s not a full transmission replacement/rebuild. Any ideas. Thanks in advance

You'll need to read the codes and not all code readers will do it. Guys who know what will and what won't will probably be along soon. Or you can take it to a garage that is properly equipped to read it.

If you're getting the blinking light there are codes stored...along with shifting issues = problem...I'd take it by a local independent transmission shop if you can drive it in...dealers/chains will want a fee just to read the codes...AAMCO may do free diagnostics come to think of it...but definitely need to get it somewhere as the chain parts store's can't read those codes and I'm not aware of any app that will either.

Download forscan on a laptop or phone, it will read the transmission codes. You'll need a obd2 adapter also, either wired or Bluetooth.

An easy check if your obd2 port is not working is to see if the cigarette lighter works, if not then it could mean a fuse has blown. They are run by the same fuse if I'm not mistaken.

Most likely the speed sensor on top of the rear end housing.

Replace with a Genuine MOTORCRAFT unit and spray clean the CONNECTOR with brake clean while you're at it.

Do this with the batteries disconnected.

This is a common problem with these trucks, I asked the same question YEARS ago, did mine and its been fine ever since.

Time for a new transmission. That's NOT what Mark will say. It could mean a myriad of different things, but doesn't matter. Prepare for a trans rebuild. And don't change parts until you know the problem. I have had this problem three different times. Hence the reason I will never run an auto again. Even had one "built" but John Wood. First it was a converter and then it was clutch pack some or other. Either way, it will not be cheap. There, hope that clarifies. Sorry for putting words in Mark's mouth.

You should check for the dreaded OD shifter wires that get chaffed by the shifter tube on the steering colum its very common, and what you describe is normally the "symptoms" of that problem.

What will you do if it still has the OD flashing with the new transmission? It is a very real possibility.

In my opinion it is a waste of money to change parts without even knowing what code was stored. If this doesn't fix it, what part gets changed next? And then after that?

That is NOT what Mark would say. I have no idea if it needs a new transmission. Changing parts (especially expen$ive parts) without knowing what's wrong is almost always a very bad idea.

when you say its the speed sensor on "top of rear end housing" are you meaning the tail part of transmission housing or on the "rear end" where the differential is located..

P0782 code

The code pulled is p0782. Shift error between 2-3. Guessing it’s a transmission issue and not sensor

anyone get that code before and what was the outcome.??
