If you are painting your truck a solid color then doing it piece by piece is preferable. That said, if you ever feel the inclination to paint it with a candy color, think twice. Color density, metallic dispersion, etc become variables that are tough to duplicate on a piece by piece job. As Schoo was saying bed liner is an option for underside. But some bed liners are also tintable so you have the choice of black or body colour. Personally I prefer body colour inside/outside/upside/downside.
