I'm getting ready to do another oil change on my '17 F-250 with the 6.2L engine. Since new I've always used the Motorcraft 5w-30 semisyn. When at Walmart today they had the 5qt Motorcraft semisyn but no quarts to get to the 7 needed so I bought 2 quarts of Valvoline 5w-30 semisyn to add to the Motorcraft oil. Is this ok? I would have done the entire oil change with Valvoline but of course they were out of the 5 qt jug of that as well.
Much along the lines of the video above, Back a long long time ago, when I thought I wanted to make a living in the automotive world, while in school I asked my engine lab instructor who I greatly looked up to (and always did long after school) "Mr Pickering, what is the best type of oil to use in an engine",,, he said "Mr Pettinato,,, the best oil to use is clean oil".
He wasnt being flip, what he explained to my younger self was that modern oils are so good, that keep it clean and they will all do a great job.
I worked at a shop in high school a couple years, I got to do around 100 oil changes a week. The only thing I noticed about brands is if you change them often I noticed those cars leaked. Cars that would come in and have a different oil change sticker almost everytime.
Also switching to synthetic after 30k or so miles would cause leaks I thought.
Granted that was almost 20 years ago and now manufacturers have more control of what the specs are.
While I fully understand the engine doesn’t know the difference, I don’t think I could handle mixing oils. I have considered mixing weights of the same brand and formula, but even that torques my psyche.
