The company I work for, has given me a '96 F250 truck to drive. The only problem that I have for it, is that the Cruise Control doesn't work anymore. It worked the first day that I used it, then on a long trip from Portland to Reno, it quit working. The few times that I could get it to work it would quit working when I would disengage it with the brake I couldn't use the resume function or the Set/Accel function to start using it again. After an hour of driving I would try using it again, but it was hit or miss if it would work again. When it works, it works really well, and doesn't cut out. This particular truck has the powerstroke.
Does the horn not work sometimes? Does the airbag light flash sometimes? It could be the clockspring which is the wire link in the steering wheel. Just a thought. Good luck.
Nitro, how did you go about changing the switches? If one has to take the steering wheel off, do you have to worry about the airbag going off? I would hate to be working on the thing and have it go off in my face! By the way Jake, the horn works, so I think the wires are connected OK.
Maybe that's what the problem is with my cruise control. Mine if you hit the off button the stinking truck speeds up rapidly! And if you hit it again, sometimes it will shutoff, and sometimes it will speed up even more!

First remove the neg. bat. cable for about 5 min. Then remove the airbag module, steering wheel, and then you should be able to see how the switches are held on.

I would first check the vacuum dump on the brake pedal. It is held on by a flimsy bracket and may be loose causing the cruise not to work. I had this problem on my truck and it took me about 5 seconds to fix once I found out the problem.
Also worth taking a look at since 1) it is easy; 2) it is free to fix and 3) it happens to me everytime I mess with the engine in that area.
Take a look at the vacuum lines on the AC/heater system under the hood, especially on the passenger side where all the AC stuff is up against the firewall. There are two or three hose sets, I think there are 2 or 3 hoses per plug. On my truck whenever I work on that side of the engine, my arm will almost always cause one of these plugs to come loose. This usually causes my cruise control to stop working and often sets a check engine light after a few miles.
Might be worth a look. Note that sometimes the plugs will actually look like the are plugged in but will have swivled around on one male vacuum fitting while the other half of the connector is sitting over empty air and the male mate is sticking out.
Of course this is on a 94 gas engine 460 but I assume the AC and cruise are similar.
