I recently replaced the starter and starter solenoid. After this replacement, the starter and flexplate seem to grind when engine is cranking. When the engine is running it sounds and runs just fine. Before I replaced the starter it never grinded. I have tried shimming it and had no success. What could it be?
Going to make a assumption that you got a parts store reman? I have seen lots of them come with the incorrect pitch on the gear. Have you pulled the starter and looked for damage?
Yes I pulled the starter after a day of having it. Teeth seem fine but it only started the engine a total of maybe 10 times so I don’t think it would show wear. It is a remanufactured part. I don’t believe the flex plate is the problem as it never happened with the old starter.

What year and series is the truck, what size is the engine?
If an FE engine, the starter is the same 1963/76 (A/T & M/T make no difference), the starter solenoid is the same for all engine sizes: 1956/79.
1965/67 F100/350 352 MX Cruise-O-Matic / 1968/76 F100/350 360/390 C6 // 1965/71 352/390 Passenger Car FX/MX Cruise-O-Matic & C6 use the same flexplate:
Your option is warranty the defective starter or buy a new one. The last reman I bought for a 390 had a 9 tooth aftermarket gear that was a different pitch than the original and made a lot of noise. Been buying the new high torque units off Ebay and all has been well since, plus you get rid of the bulky direct drive original starter.
Thanks for the link. This might be a dumb question but, with this starter do you no longer use the solenoid that’s attached on the passenger side under the hood?
Yup, sounds like you got a starter with the wrong pitch gear. I did that once, but it was exactly opposite. I got the RIGHT starter, but the flywheel ring gear was the wrong pitch. I have pictures somewhere...
Ah, here it is. The finer pitch is the "normal" FE pitch for at least the 70's. The courser pitch is more of an FT heavy truck style, but who knows, at some point, they may have switched. @NumberDummy What are the two pitches?
