I think if more people just tried it, they would be surprised at what they could make. $500 in tools (a cheap welder & tank to start with will be the biggest cost) and knowing how to read a tape measure, and anyone with some common sense can build one. Metal is not really any different than wood...it just takes a welder to stick it together vs. a nail/screw/glue.
Been thinking of creating a headache rack myself, as I have a solid RKI rack, but is is just slightly too tall to fit under my garage door header if I install it.
I have a Miller 211 MIG and an old stick welder, and metal is plentiful near me. I like the idea of the tie down points, etc., as you can customize your rack to the n-th degree if you build/design your own.
In case I cop out on the build, anyone know of any lower-profile headache racks for the 17-19 SD's? I really do not need one that is much higher than the cab roof since anything I'd put in the bed would be at an angle as it rests on the headache rack top bar.
