Hi All. I just put a different PCM in Old Gray. A bit of history.... Last winter I swapped engines and trany's. Took out a tired 95 7.3 and put in a low milage 7.3 from a 97. The truck was running ok for the past year but there was a bit of a power lag at low rmp's. Anyway, I had a PCM that was supposed to be the one from the newer motor so I put it in. Well it is throwing a pile od auto trany codes, but I have a ZF5, so I guess its not the PCM from this motor.
So my ??, does the PCM have to match the trany? And does the PCM have to match the same year as the motor, Like can I run a 1995 PCM with a 1997 motor?
Oh, and one more thing, when I start the truck up, It SURGES real hard for maybe 15 seconds then flattens out. Any ideas???
To match your stick tranny, you need a DPC-203 pcm. The dpc code is the hardware, the 4 digits in the tag is the strategy. All strategies are fine, the newer ones have tweaks. It’s likely you have a DPC-202 which is for an auto and the reason why it surges on start up.

Thanks for the info, Ill put my older one back in as it is for a manual. Ill have to look around for a newer, 1996-1997 one with the DPC-203, or perhaps I can swap with someone...
