Hello all. After fixing my front door alignment I decided to check all the other bolts on the hinges to my truck. The bolt on the top hinge, driver side, is completely stripped, as I can spin it with my finger and it never tightens. The same bolt on the passenger side is fine. Also, the bottom hinges have what looks to be the hole for a bolt, but no bolt, both driver and passenger side rear. Does anyone know what would be required to get inside the cab and replace the stripped bolt/but combo (i assume)? And do yalls lower hinges had a bolt?
What adjustments did you make and why did you decide to do them rather than the dealer? Tried to post a photo of the lower hinge on my rear passenger door but it wont let me for some reason. Anyway, it looks the same as yours.
Originally took it to dealer, they said they fixed it, but the bolts on my front door were untouched (I marked them with a small paint pen to see if they actually did anything). So I found the instructions on this forum out of the manual, and did it myself. Simply losen the top bolt on the door, barely push the door in, and tighten to 35ft lbs. The door was misaligned at the top, basically it was too far away from the body and had some wind noise.
A thread on this forum mentioned to check all your bolts as some weren’t torqued enough and some were lose. So I checked mine with my torque wrench, 3 of 8 were a full rotation from spec.
I then checked the hinge mount to the body of the truck. That’s when I discovered the bolt in question just free spinning. It didn’t turn, then strip. I could literally just turn with my finger and never tighten.
My guess for the one you think stripped is not actually “stripped”, I would guess(as I don’t really know) that Ford used some sort of riv nut, or something that is attached to the panel inside the pillar, and your bolt was seized up and when you went to tighten it, broke the nut loose from whatever was holding it, not sure what they use in aluminum, but I do know riv nuts are common for this application.
This sounds like a pain in the ***, and the only solution I know of, unless you can gain access inside the pillar to hold the nut with some vice grips, would be to drill the head off the bolt, then install a new rivnut. And live with the old one rattling around inside the pillar for the rest of the trucks life. Not ideal, but it’s something.
before you go drilling it out, just in case, loosen up the other bolt, and try to get some pressure pulling the bolt straight out, and loosen it while applying pressure, maybe it will be enough to hold the nut while you back the bolt out, but if it was seized up, or even loctited, it may not work.
If you do pull the b pillar trim, please post some photos and what's involved in removing it. I think you can access those nuts after removing the trim.
