Took the truck (79 F150 2wd 351M auto) out for a spin a week or so ago. Came to a stop light about 5 miles from home and it just quit. No sputtering or noise, just died. Cranked it over and it started right up so continued on my way. A little farther on it quit again. Took a few extra cranks this time but it fired up. Turned around and took it home. It did not quit on the way home. Thought it might have been a little bad fuel.
Tried a few days later and it quit at the same intersection. Had a hard time starting it but it fired up just as the light turned green. I made my left turn and it quit again. Even harder to start this time. Took it home.
Today I swapped in my spare ignition control module (ICM). Everyone carries a spare, right?
That solved the problem, at least so it seams after taking it out for about a 10 mile drive. If I experience any more issues I will be back looking for help!
Here are some pics (cause I've been on here long enough to know y'all like yer pics).
Zip tied the new one to the tire iron for testing ...
New ICM installed:
Backside of old ICM:
Old connectors were in bad shapethe crud is old dielectric grease):
Now to pick up a genuine Motorcraft ICM to replace this aftermarket one which will return to being a spare.
i have a an old stock never used blue connector HD module i will never use because i went with an HEI distrib in the 73. i dont know what to do with it... totally useless to me now.. hmm.. wish could turn it into a part that i do need and can use.. trades hmm... somehow..

Hi Fast68. Is that a Motorcraft ICM? What parts are you looking for?

Would that work on my '74 F250 Camper Special, 390/C6?

Reason: oops
1974 module is 1974 only, 1975 module is 1975 only.Blue grommet module introduced in 1976.
Plus, this is an aftermarket auto parts store module, because it's not embossed MOTORCRAFT
OK Bill,
I failed to follow thru with logical thinking!
I pulled the one off my '75 parts truck after 2 bad ones in a row from O-Reillys for my other '75. I traded the running '75 for this kids '98 F150 and I got the short end. The kid drives my old truck to high school every day and is very happy, so at least I gave him some good memories!!! I am looking for a old spare for my '74, that's why I jumped the gun...
I bought a Motorcraft spare a while ago and then I decided why not just replace it right now so I don't have to worry about the break down at all so I just replaced it with the spare
I replaced my stator the other day with a new Standard one. wouldn't start, put the old one in ran great. got a replacement new one and it ran like crap. put the old one in it ran great. got an NOS Prestolite one on ebay and it runs great.
The moral of the story is all chinese crap is junk. I always liked Standard but they're import junk now. from now on I'll go to the trouble to find new domestic parts even if they're old whenever possible. I'm pretty sure the new motorcraft ECM's are imported too.
I keep an ICM in the toolbox, AND a stator. I’ve now replaced all three stators:
Your crack is showing!
That's a good idea and I've replaced a couple on complete overhauls. The wires to them move with the breaker plate and that moves most of the time your driving. If anyone is looking for a module look through local grave yards AMC used the blue module for several years. I still have a almost new one from a totaled Ford escort behind the seat. My 78 module potting soil ran down the inner fender 30 years ago and still working fine. Well as long as it knows there is a replacement at hand.
