Hey folks, I have an 83 F-100, 300 I6, C6. Last year my ignition got screwed up, I ended up swapping the column. I had to remove the shift linkage. Went to AutoZone, got a new bushing, but it wouldn't really fit in all the way. Every person I found said they had used the exact kit I got. Any suggestions from you guys on how to get this thing fitted in there?
I'm frustrated enough with it that I am considering jimmy rigging it with a cotter pin. The few times I needed to move it, I got out and shifted manually, but obviously that isn't a solution.
Need more info, pictures, or both. Is this a bushing down between the column and the steering box that the shift rod goes into? Or is it another bushing somewhere else?

The correct bushing has inside/outside shoulders, it can be a real b!tch to install! It's rather common to crack the little charmer attempting to get it to fit properly.

If what Bill is saying is true and you not being able to install it all the way has to be fun.
Have you tried to press it in?
A long bolt or threaded rod, flat washers, a nut or 2 and a deep socket.
A flat washer to the bushing, with the bolt thru the washer & bushing thru the column then socket flat washer & nut.
When you tighten the nut the flat washer should pull the bushing thru the lever and the socket give room on the other side for the bushing to pull thru the lever.

I think I would put some water in a cup in the microwave, bring it to a boil, and then take it out and dunk the bushing into the water and let it soften it up some before trying to get it in place. I have done this for seals in hydraulic cylinders and it does wonders to soften them up enough to work with them.
One method is taking a small piece of plywood with a hole drilled in it larger than the bushing and place it on the receiving side then take another piece and place it against the bushing. Then either vise grips or a clamp depending on room.
I always put some grease on mine first also.
I bought all mine from Summit but the parts store is likely the same.
