Can anyone tell me if the Dana 60 front axle from a 1990 f-250 will be a direct replacement for the Dana 60 in my 1976 super Cab? They both have leaf spring mounts. Just checking to see if I could drop it in. Thank you.
My super cab originally came as a 2 wheel drive. It was converted to 4x4 but the guy used a dana 60 closed knuckle for it. I found a guy that will sell the dana 44 from his 1974 high boy, would that be a direct fit? I just want to get rid of the closed knuckle and dont wanna waste money and have two axles that are useless.
The Dana 44 from a ‘74 highboy is probably closed knuckle also.
Yeah, my 74 f250 has Dana44 closed knuckles. I think the 76/77 dana44s are the ones that went to open knuckle (and discs)
Also why the hate on the close knuckles? You doing seriously off roading where you're busting them and can't replace the u joints? That's the only argument I usually see for people needing open knuckles (easier trail maintenance). Notice I said "needing" not "wanting" lol

Everything I have researched on closed knuckles has not been promising at all. turing radius is drastically reduced, I am unable to do the disc brake converversion because I have the closed 60 and they dont make the parts, The parts for open knuckle are easier to find and cheaper, and the manuals to fix and work on it are more readily available. All in all everything I have read suggest the Dana 44hd is a stronger axle than the 60 closed.
I don't think there's a huge difference in turning radius (yes I know there is a difference just didn't think it was that big). If so can someone shed some light on how big a difference it makes?
Yeah the disc swap is the one reason I'm considering a 76/77 44 swap but again drums aren't bad brakes and it's what use to be the standard. They aren't crap. Yes we have made advancements in brakes but it doesn't mean drums don't work. Also my 44 IS an HD.
Just being devils advocate here (also trying to see if I can convince myself it's worth the hassle for the swap, but I'd have to find a smokin deal to go thru the hassle right now)
