Depending on the type of primer it may be ok.
I say this because I use a lacquer primer on my project and it will not stand up to the weather, read water.
My primer does not stand up to weather and will let water thru and this can lead to rusting under the primer.
You will not see this till it is to late.
I painted my 81 flare side bed apart so I could get paint on all edges and hope to hold off the rust as long as I can.
I still have the tail gate, running boards and the red on the rear fenders I hope to do this weekend.
