I just purchased a 2017 F250. 6.2 L gas it came with two of the switchblade style keys, one almost gets stuck and won't work at all and the other one is kind of hard to insert and remove. Do I just need to order a new key copies or replace the entire lock assembly
New truck or used? If it's new then you should most certainly get back to your dealer and have them replace the keys or ignition cylinder. If it's used and bought as is, I would start with giving the keys a firm cleaning and deburring with a wire brush. Perhaps cleaning out the ignition cylinder with a can of compressed air (low pressure). It is of course possible that the keys have worn and aren't working well anymore but find that very hard to believe with a truck only 2-3 years old. I typically only see that on vehicles well over 10 years old with heavy use.
My 2018 was that way from the factory and continues to be. Those thin new keys suck and it's hard to get them in/out without looking directly at the lock assembly. I used to be able to "feel" the key properly insert, but now I have to look and align it perfectly or it's a PITA.
Interesting. My '17 is flawless and the key can be inserted without looking or screwing around. I cut a 3rd flip key and I cut a basic plastic head chipkey for the truck as well with no issues.
My local dealer was close to $400 to cut a new key, I called a local locksmith and he cut me the same key and programmed it for about $180, while I waited. My key has remote start, no tailgate button, and appears to be oem ford flip out key. I’d skip the dealer and find a locksmith, most should be able to do it for much less than a dealer.
Thanks guys. Y'all told me what I wanted to hear. I just ordered a new blank off of Amazon for $34. I'll find a local shop to cut and program it. I'll keep my current key that still works as a spare
