172 Error Code Ford 1994 F53
I used my OBD scanner to check the datastream. After running the engine for 15 minutes, engine temp to 154, my STFTRM1 was 23 at idle! My O2Sen slowly moved from .03, .02, .01, .06, and a fast jump to .86, then back to typical readings. At 1500 RPMs, O2Sen jumped a lot around in the typical range, but many times to .74 and.86. STFTRM1 hovered from -2 to 0. After returning to idle, O2Sen continued the same idle readings as before. STFTRM1 was then at 11. At 2200 RPMs, O2Sen jumped around the typical readings, and jumped like it did before to .86, STFTRM1 was between 0 and -2. Return to idle, and readings were the same as before at idle with STFTRM1 back to 11.
Over the time I've been chasing this issue, the following was replaced: fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, EGR valve and position sensor, MAP, EVP solenoid, air filter, crankcase breather filter, PCV valve, CANP, many vacuum lines, spark plug wires, spark plugs, ignition coil, throttle body position sensor, and the O2 sensor.
I verified the fuel pressure at idle, driving, and WOT. Checked vacuum pressure. Verified no damage to the distributor cap.
A few things I have noted from other posts. I used a Bosch O2 sensor. Might be a problem. My dash engine temperature gauge tends to show the very low end of normal or cold, but it will sometimes show in the lower 1/3 of normal. Have not replaced the carbon canister. Did not check for vacuum leaks with a smoke test or with carb cleaner.
Not sure what to do next. Thanks for any advice!
Sean
