Steering issue

Hi guys, I have a 1989 f150 xlt lariat 5.0, so while pulling into the driveway I heard a pop when I turned the wheel and now the wheel turns 360 degrees and the wheels don't move, but if I grab the column where it meets the firewall I can turn the wheels, the horn still works, turn signals work, all electrical works as it should but the wheel just turns freely, when I turn it it sounds like its trying to catch on something maybe a gear inside the column? I've never had this happen anybody have any clues what it could be before I just buy a column. thanks
