Delta's

Today I noticed my EOT's got about 3 degrees out of the delta range for a few miles I was doin about 65 with no trailer or load of any kind when I got off the highway and slowed down it came back down into the 15 degree range. now I do need a coolant flush and plan on having one done this week my coolant is fairly dirty and way over due for this flush will getting the flush improve these numbers or will I eventually need a oil cooler? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Trucks an 03 and deleted I put a new oil cooler in about a year and a half ago when I did the delete. Thanks.

what were the deltas after the new oil cooler? Unless you did a complete coolant flush or the coolant was in good shape, more than likely your cooler just plugged up. You could try a "oil cooler back flush" which is accomplished by introducing water pressure to the coolers exit fitting (you will need a special hook up that costs about 100-150). and you should do a proper coolant flush. Lots of utube and directions for that online. Or, you could bring it to a shop that has the equipment to do all this. google "oil cooler back flush 6.0" .

ps, to answer your question, I doubt that just a coolant flush and change will bring back the oil cooler, my guess is you will also need to blow the cooler out as above. It would be worth it, I think, to try this before a new cooler, either way you will need a good and proper flush so why not do that now with the added step of cooler back flush.

Ambient temperature really shouldn't have much to do with the oil/coolant differential temperature.

I see plenty of 98 degree days and the differential is still 8 degrees max.

Delta needs to be checked on a level highway after the truck is fully warmed up (about 30 minutes) and running @ 2000 rpm. No loads or hard accelaration. A 3 degree swing does not sound that bad to me personnal, especially on a 90* day. Since your coolant is "dirty" I would flush the system with distilled water. Keep draining and refilling until it comes out clear enough to drink, but dont. I would not consider a back flush unless the normal flush does not clear up. If it does clear up, just drain and fill with antifreeze to at least a 50/50 mix. You will have to calculate how much antifreeze based on the systems capacity. Then fill it up to the low mark on the degas bottle with distilled water. Dont forget to use a good coolant and I would consider installing a collant filter.

My data in case it helps: Oil cooler ruptured, was seeing 199/213 @ 80mph (lots of freeway driving) before rupture in 90°+ weather. Replaced both coolers and am now seeing 195/205 at same mph. Around town it's 193/199.

My ect will creep up to 206 at a stoplight right after a lot of stop & go driving, but the fan clutch has over 180k miles so I think it needs to be replaced.

We ALL eventually need an oil cooler. Just know its coming and plan for it, but wait to pull the trigger until your deltas are 15+ consistently. That's what I would do if I had to pay someone to do the work.

My delta never get above 10 on any occasion unless i am towing up hill. Normally, my delta is about 7-9 degrees. Largest delta i've seen is 15-17 and that was when i was towing 5000lbs up that mountain on i-5 outside of LA where it was 98 outside with full AC but the temp dropped very quickly. I have replaced stock radiator with bulletproof radiator, stock water pump with bulletproof water pump and added a coolant filter system as soon as i bought the truck.

Check your delta after a cold soak. Mine delta is always 3 to 4 degrees different when I start the truck. That being said, the oil temp is always highest even after a day or 20 of sitting.

It doesn't sound to me like you have anything to worry about. I consistently see 7-9 degree deltas in 100 degree outside temps.

I also have a Performance radiator, which is what BPD rebrands and sells for more, and I never thought it cooled as well as the stocker. As for the BPD water pump, do they claim it moves more coolant than stock? Or is it just more robust and prettier?

I agree that the stock radiator cools at least as well as the BPD radiator and probably a little bit better. My oil/coolant temperature differentials are 5-8 degrees and that is also in many "near 100 degree" days (and also at heavy acceleration and when towing). That is mainly telling us how well a clean oil cooler works . OP - yours needs to be backflushed.

Also - I am developing an opinion that the BPD water pump may not move as much as the stock water pump. I have one installed and am considering going back to stock to see if my coolant temperatures are more stable. Even with more variability in coolant temperature on the hot days, the oil temperature differential is still around 8 degrees. That water pump experiment will need to wait for summer conditions again. All said - I don't see the BPD water pump as a performance upgrade. The aluminum impellor may last longer than the OEM water pump impellor, but I doubt that the OEM plastic one is a big issue anymore.

If you decide you want a 6.0 flush kit, let me know. I'll make you a deal on one I have new in the box that I don't need (I wound up going with a BPD remote oil cooler kit).

Thanks for the offer but in the last 2 weeks coincidentally I ended up going the same route you did probably even the same kit.
