My truck is in really good shape, and besides some paint peeling on the hood, the rest of the rig is great. But the rear hatch piece is peeling it's clear coat. Is there an easy way to fix this? Vinyl wrap maybe? Any other methods?
The clear is peeling as you see, the new price for these has shot up to 455.00. You can remove it and take it to a body shop for new paint, and clear. I recently found the rear air deflector, it was close to peeling, I had it repainted.
I'm pretty sure this peeling is a Ford OEM feature because I have yet to see one not like that. I bought some 3M gloss black vinyl wrap to recover mine and I very nearly succeeded until I snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and ruined it. Haven't tried again yet.
The interior lift gate trim needs to be removed, and the lock cylinder if I remember. Then there are maybe 6 3/8' nuts that hold the handle trim on. I replaced mine with a new Ford one before they shot up in price. I have it and 2 spares. It was not a difficult task.
Hell this gives me an idea to have my original one painted, do an exchange sale of a painted one for a weathered one.
I could image the price for shipping one might cost more than having it refinished.
I found a diagram of it and it looks like it only has 4 nuts.
Add 2-4 additional nuts that hold the latch mechanism to the lift gate frame. I don’t remember the exact count but remember pulling more that four total. If you know someone with small hands, thet have an easier time disconnecting the latch linkages.
if memory serves me right, there is a spacer/shim that sits between the latch and the lift gate that likes to slide out of place. Things won’t bolt right to the window if that shim isn’t in right. Going off memory so hoping others will confirm/debunk.
Not a difficult task to pull of off. Just take your time.
Was in the process of experimenting with “Peel Coat” from Rustoleum on the back of the ex bumper when I saw this post. Just did this.
Can you elaborate on the work you did? My clearcoat has also peeled but i don't want to go the whole nine yards to make it look better. Yours looks good enough to do on mine.
