Van popped up "service engine soon" light while driving down highway on vacation. Pulled in to local dealer had mass airflow sensor and pcv replaced as this is what was wrong. Now, three days later it pops up again. This time take it to home town dealer and says it's fuel pump. Would it be different code reading to have distinguished that in the first place or possibly coincidental both situations happened anyway? Mileage: 169,000. Never replaced pump or other items before.
How is your full throttle acceleration? Is it falling on its face at high demand (off idle punch or high rpm)? What year are we talking about? A fuel pressure gauge will tell you a lot about the issue and make sure they are right before you drop the money to fix it (fuel filter changed recently). If you do fix it remember to buy a good pump as you don't want to do it again for another 160k. Some later years the OBD reader will tell you fuel pressure and you won't have to use a gauge. PCV and mass air sensor shouldn't be in the same code ballpark especially if it fixed your code after they replaced it but they may have reset it and not got triggered again for a few days. What were the original symptoms when it gave you the first service soon light? Hesitation? Smoking? Low power? Funky rich/lean smell?

It's a 1999 E350, Quigley 4x4. It has had some intermittent hesitation for over a year where you would occasionally come up to a stop or make a slow turn and it would just try to die when you take off, but then kick in quickly and go. Didn't happen frequently. Fuel filter was replaced about 3 years ago. Got a report from the dealer today saying reading on pump was 26 psi on demand. Said something like 60 is what it is supposed to be. Other than occasional hesitation as mentioned, there were no other symptoms. I was just driving along on highway about 70mph and the light came on. Seemed to have less power but not much. Turning engine off then restarting, it would crank a several times before starting which it had never done before. Always fired up when hit the key. No smoke, but it smelled more hydrocarbon odor at exhaust. Dealer said it was running lean because of mass air sensor malfunction. For your recommendation of a good pump, what is good aftermarket or OEM Ford?
Forgot to mention, I have a Transfer Flow 40gal tank replacement on the vehicle. Not sure if that adds to complication of fuel pump replacement or lessens it.
So does that take a special pump and pick-up? You get what you pay for with pumps (up to a point). Look on Rockauto for premium pumps and then hit up Amazon and compare prices.
So, work was completed by dealer. Transfer flow has replacement filter which is $99 but it is nothing special per se for the tank itself. Dealer installed comparable, upper grade one plus filter and relay. Two of the MAF sensors they installed failed and the searched out an OEM Ford, shipped it in from Louisiana and installed. That worked. PCV valve replaced. Codes they found were as follows: P0171, P0174 lean both banks. P0102 MAF. All those codes cleared with work done. HOWEVER! They are still getting P0605- PCM memory failure code. Check engine light not coming on though. They suggested if it does, replace PCM. Note: I installed Superchips chip years ago and everything has worked fine until now. Now I'm wondering how this PCM thing will play out. If it is still throwing that code, is future failure likely? How easy is it to find a PCM for a '99 now?
