Hi guys, I'm new to this forum. I'm a diesel mechanic/tech but just stumped with this one. I have a 1997 F350 CCLB 7.3 Automatic with 4x4 with 370,000 miles on it, runs great. But i'm having trouble with the VSS. The speedometer will start to jump around after 45MPH and only jump about 5MPH on either side on the speed I'm going , but trucks shifts good. Just hard to drive when you mighty be speeding and have no Cruise Control. Most of the time you can replace or clean the VSS and be good to go, I've done that. I replaced the VSS and still had an issues, so I checked the new sensor and it tests good, was in spec. So, I thought maybe wiring. All good, I checked resistance from the VSS pigtail to Speedometer connector on back of the cluster. I decided to swap the cluster with a known good part (my brothers 1997 f250 CCSB 7.3 Automatic with 4x4) same problem. Well only one thing left. The reluctor ring in the rear-end. I checked it also when I pulled the speed sensor, teeth are good. Not sure what else to check now. Any help with be greatly appreciated!!

Did you replace it with a Ford motorcraft vss? I had the same issue, and replaced it with a standard brand VSS and it made the issue x100 worse. Changed it to a Ford vss it fixed the issue.
