Hi I'm fairly mechanically inept so have to ask:
My clutch seems to be stuck. When I start the truck with the shifter in neutral no problem but it won't go in gear (grinds) while running but if I shut the truck off I can put it in gear but it wants to take off, good thing I had it in reverse when I found that out or we would have launched forward through the garage wall and ruined my very nice grill and bumber. Anyway is my clutch shot or has all the moisture we got lately making it stick? How hard is it to replace the clutch if I need to?
Thanks.
Easier with two people. If one pushes in the clutch pedal while the other is watching the mechanism underneath you might be able to see if it's actuating things correctly. Pushing on the pedal should move the clutch rod in the truck that goes through the floorboards to the Z bar. The Z bar should be pivoting smoothly on its pivot points without excess slop on the pivots. The opposite end of the Z bar should push on another rod that goes to the throw out bearing release fork. The fork should also pivot smoothly without excess slop. Then if you remove the inspection plate underneath the clutch you should be able to see if the throwout bearing is pressing against the clutch pressure plate fingers and activating them to release the plate from the disc.
They can get stuck, but it's not very common. Rust on the throwout bearing retainer can keep the bearing from moving on the retainer. And sometimes the disc will rust to the flywheel, but that's a fairly extreme situation. More common if the vehicle has been driven lots without the inspection cover installed.
The most likely problem is that the clutch is not adjusted properly to allow it to disengage when the pedal is depressed. It's possible someone replaced the clutch disc with one from a different manufacturer than the pressure plate and it doesn't have enough air gap to allow it to disengage. If you aren't able to adjust the clutch rod at the bell housing to allow it to fully disengage, you're going to have to pull the transmission and take some measurements to see if there is adequate clearance between the pressure plate and flywheel for your clutch disc.
Thanks everyone for the information and pic it gives me a good place to start. Should have mentioned I've had the truck for a few years and have driven it around quite a bit previously but the last couple times the clutch didn't feel right. I'll start with the suggestions and if worse comes to worse I'll pull the transmission and take it to my mechanic.
Thanks.

Sounds like your having similar issues to me. I changed motor mounts and it shifts much better now. You should check those and also look at possibly adjusting the linkage to the pedal.
Sounds like my problem, but in my case the bushings are worn on the Z bar. More so on the frame side. I can start the truck in gear and it slips but I can`t take it out of gear and put it back in when running. It leads me to the bushings and probably I change the clutch soon too.
